What is Europe Day?

9 May is Europe Day. It is for every citizen of the European Union because it recalls a certain 9 May 1950 …. On that day, five years after the end of the Second World War the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, made the founding call for the building of Europe in a declaration that has since become famous, in which he announced the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). At the European Council held in Milan in 1985, Heads of State and government decided to establish 9 May as “Europe Day”. Celebrated every year since 1986, Europe Day is a time for activities and festivities that bring together European citizens and peoples. Robert Schuman’s declaration of 9 May is available in the Union’s 23 languages on the Foundation’s web site.

Robert Schuman lived in this town in Moselle from 1926 to 1963. His house was listed as a European heritage site on 19 March 2006. Several events will be held there within the context of Europe week from 9 to 18 May.

Schuman Parade in Warsaw
