The Robert Schuman Foundation working at the heart of Europe
The Robert Schuman Foundation that was founded in 1991 after the fall of the Berlin
Wall was approved by the State for its services to the public in 1992; it works to promote
the construction of Europe both with regard to its ideas and in the field alongside the
citizens themselves. The Foundation, which is a centre renowned for its research on the
European Union, has provided itself with the task of maintaining the spirit and inspiration
of one of the "Founder Fathers" of Europe, namely
Robert Schuman and of promoting European
values and ideals both within the Union's frontiers as well as beyond.
The Robert Schuman Foundation pursues three main goals:
1. Contributing to debates and progress achieved by the European Union
The Foundation works with a network of researchers and contacts, regularly calling on the expertise
of European Union specialists. The Foundation's studies and analyses aim at providing European decision
makers along with information with arguments and details of high quality on the Union. These studies
comprise a precious source of information for all of those who want to understand the issues at stake in Europe.
2. Helping the new Member States in their integration into the European Union and making contact with the Union's neighbours
The Schuman Foundation has increased its work in the field to take democracy forwards in Europe. It provides
help to all the new Member States in the Union, also to candidate countries and neighbouring states in order
to create privileged links and help these countries develop their relations with Europe thereby contributing
to the establishment of a rule of law according to European standards.
3. Encouraging research and young European researchers
Among research centres, the Foundation is one of the main provider of publications on the European Union and
its policies. Notably it provides young researchers with an opportunity to publish their work. It also provides
research
grants to doctorate or post doctoral
students who are working on European subjects.

To achieve its goals the Robert Schuman Foundation implements an active publication policy and organises a great number of events.
The Foundation's Publications
By publishing
documents the Robert Schuman Foundation helps to promote the debate on Europe.
The
Schuman Report on the State of the Union
and
European Opinion are published annually.
The Foundation publishes a series of
"Notes",
original texts on economic, social and strategic developments that affect the European Union and which are influencing its future.
Every week the Foundation sends an electronic newsletter -
The Letter

topics of European interest. The Letter is distributed in five languages (French, English, German, Spanish and Polish) and at present
it is delivered to over 200,000 subscribers around the world. With each letter the Foundation publishes a study entitled
"European Issues", a strategic paper that looks further into an issue of public interest, or a
"European Interview" providing the views of leading personalities on a topical subject.
The
"European Elections Monitor" delivers a detailed analysis of the stakes and the results of
every presidential, general election or referendum in every country across the European continent.
The Foundation promotes the distribution of European information to centres of learning, libraries and documentation centres.
Information brochures for the general public are also delivered when a major event in Europe is ongoing.
Events
Because it is vital to bring ideas together to take the European ideal forwards the Foundation organises and takes part in a great
number of European and international meetings,
conferences and
round tables.
It develops various research programmes in conjunction with universities and think-tanks. Over the years the Foundation
has created a vast network of partners in Europe and across the world in order to discuss and exchange views on the European
project and its future perspectives. It participates in establishing an open, multinational European network and holds a privileged
position amongst the major players in the European public debate.
It also supports the organisation of
training seminars for young European
decision makers both in Union Member States and in neighbouring countries.
All of the Foundation's work and activities can be consulted on the website www.robert-schuman.eu.
The Foundation is managed by a
Bureau and a Board
which decide the strategic lines to be followed; there is also a
Scientific Committee which decides on the guidelines
for future work and which assesses these.
